Job 23:8-17
“Behold, I go forward, but he is not there,
and backward, but I do not perceive him;
on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him;
he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him.
But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
My foot has held fast to his steps;
I have kept his way and have not turned aside.
I have not departed from the commandment of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.
But he is unchangeable, and who can turn him back?
What he desires, that he does.
For he will complete what he appoints for me,
and many such things are in his mind.
Therefore I am terrified at his presence;
when I consider, I am in dread of him.
God has made my heart faint;
the Almighty has terrified me;
yet I am not silenced because of the darkness,
nor because thick darkness covers my face.
Have you ever gotten turned around and finally realized you did not know which way to turn? I have always had an excellent sense of direction but there was a time when I first realized I did not know which direction to go in. I had followed a stream in the woods that I was hunting in without realizing how much it had turned and twisted in the ridges. It was scary, but I found a camp with hunters that were familiar with the area. They got me headed in the right direction. The embarrassing part was finding out that somehow, I had circled around and was close to my own camp. We are like that with our walk with God, not sure which way to go. Job reached a time wondering which way to go and it seemed he could not find God. When he looked forward, he could not find Him. Then he discovered God knew the way He had for Job to follow. To find God, we must seek Him. We need to be in His will to find the light onto our paths. We need to be willing to stop, listen to His voice, and test it with His word.
There’s a moment in every believer’s life when the path that once felt clear suddenly becomes confusing. You think you’re following the right stream, only to realize it has twisted and turned more than you realized. Before you know it, you’re standing in unfamiliar territory, unsure which way to go.
Even the strongest sense of direction can fail. Even the strongest believer can feel lost.
Job knew that feeling. He looked forward and couldn’t find God. He looked behind, to the left, to the right—and still felt alone. But then he remembered something deeper than his confusion:
“But He knows the way that I take.” Job didn’t know where he was, but God did. Job didn’t know the next step, but God did. Job didn’t see the path, but God was still guiding it.
And that’s the turning point for us too.
We don’t find our way by guessing. We don’t find our way by pushing harder. We find our way by seeking Him.
- By stopping long enough to listen
- By testing every voice against His Word
- By letting His will—not our instincts—be the compass
- By trusting that His light still shines on the path, even when we can’t see the whole trail
Sometimes, like the story in the woods, we discover we weren’t as far off as we feared. Sometimes God brings people into our lives to point us back. And sometimes He simply waits for us to pause long enough to hear Him say, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Your story is a reminder that being turned around isn’t failure, it’s an invitation. An invitation to seek, to listen, and to trust the One who never loses track of us.
